Cyber Sci-fi Literature : The Alpha Centaury Project – Thinking Worlds By M.Santini – Story
Year 2295. Mankind lives on Earth and the Moon, last fortresses of its past hegemony. The Red Planet and the Web are inhabited by the virtual beings: artificial intelligences and souls, these last obtained by digitalising the brain after death. The digital reality, an accurate reproduction of the tangible world, lets the two populations to be in contact.
However their diversity is deep, their goals incompatible.
The digital creatures can visit the Earth solely for short periods, putting themselves in the body of androids and machines. Aside from that, they’re confined in worlds too little for their unbounded objectives?
The Earth is a sort of heaven. With brain digitization, human beings have postponed actual death to an indeterminate future. But they’re not happy. Towards the digital people they feel esteem and resentment but also inadequacy and much rage.
After death, they will be part of the virtual community, but in the meantime they must live with their imperfections, and confront the other population that looks like having none.
In both groups, a deep disquiet spreads, ending in outbreaks of hostility. Not even their membership in the Confederation, will prevent war one day.
Towards mid-century, the digital people begin wondering if it really makes sense to occupy the Earth, partly from moral reflections – their consideration for diversity and their descent – but above all because their objects are changing. Their Mars test has allowed them to develop the skills required in space environments, above all to get the self-confidence crucial for a huge mission: the migration to new star systems. The project gets the humans’ cooperation, in exchange for the waiver of any occupation of the Earth.
The construction of three space vessels proceeds swiftly. They are finished within a quinquennium. However just before departure, Security gets a suspicious transmission from the Space Agency. Terrorism? The evidence leads to the Elects, a sect that entered Net fifty years before with a group suicide. Traces of the Elects have been lost for a long time but the sanguinary terrorist assaults appear to be related to them. Who is hiding behind them? Most of all, what do they seek?

Suspense, action, but also reflections. The main characters move in a prospected context of epoch making events, getting increasingly concerned with the adversities of their people up to rising to leaders.
And their world, so strange at the start, gets possible from the recurrent references to the present reality until it seems an obvious development. From this, a powerful and disquieting comparison with our actual civilization surfaces; that stripping away page after page of conventions and preconceptions, leaves us eventually face to face with the nature and central values of a human being.
In the book, these same factors will give Mankind the force to take audacious decisions for its own future. In the meantime, AI reveals itself as the means of evolutionary progress towards superior consciousness and participation .
